Keynote Addresses:
Thomas Davenport, Distinguished Professor of Information Technology and Management and Director of Research and Executive Education, Babson College, will discuss how almost every business process and job can now be performed offshore. Research and company experiences, however, suggest that geographical proximity is still an important factor in the perfromance of some processes. In this presentation Tom Davenport will describe the decision rules and guidelines that a company can use in deciding what processes to take offshore, and how to best prepare for the offshoring of a process. He will also describe a new study of which jobs are most likely to move offshore, and how companies and individual works can prepare for the shifts in the global knowledge economy.
Len Rinaldi, CFO and VP, EMEA, Lucent Technologies, will discuss how in 2002, Lucent Technologies, the global leader in telecom equipment, had to redraw strategy and fundamentally restructure the company. Seeking to optimize its cash position, Lucent sought to revamp existing back-office business processes, including accounts receivable (A/R) administration. Looking at its multi-billion dollar Europe, Middle East and Africa customer base, Lucent saw the need for a flexible, yet scalable resource to better manage first-party collections and billing disputes and to improve service to its best customers. After a disappointing run with shared services managed internally, Lucent brought in Equitant, a first-party outsourcing provider with the required process expertise. Lucent aimed for (1) centralization and harmonization of the invoice-to-cash process across EMEA; (2) integration of 17 ERP systems into centralized I-2-C platform; (3) improvement in business control and key W/C metrics; (4) strategic focus on Top 50 global customers; and (5) higher customer satisfaction. The first-year result included $100+ million in working capital improvements through a reduction in past-due receivables. Lucent also sliced deeply into the time needed to solve disputes and saw dramatic increases in control and pan-European visibility of its A/R. Management can now continuously monitor performance and isolate process deficiencies quickly. In this presentation, CFO Len Rinaldi likens the 4-month transformation of Lucent's processes and technology to "changing the engines of a 747 in mid-flight." He also looks at how CFOs can drive success in an outsourcing partnership offshore.
