The CFO Rising Conference & Exhibition will be held at the Westin Innisbrook Resort
in Tampa, Florida on March 16-19, 2003.
Keynote Addresses:
Arthur Levitt, former Chairman of the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, will discuss the relationship between broker compensation and trading accounts; the conflicts of interest inherent in buy-hold-or sell recommendations of analysts; what exactly happens - and who gets a piece of the action - when you place an order; the "seven deadly sins" of mutual funds; the vagaries and vicissitudes of 401(k) investments; how accountants engage in slight of hand to fake impressive company performance; how to find the truth in a company's financial statements; the real reason for the Street's hostility to full disclosure. He will also comment on the current crises in corporate governance.
David Shedlarz, EVP and CFO of Pfizer, will discuss the leadership role the CFO can play to help restore investors' trust and confidence in the "worst of times" in the sense of the current business climate given recent incidents of insider trading, dubious financial reporting practices, executive "self-dealing," and poor governance practices. Business development and Pfizer's recent acquisitions of Warner-Lambert and Pharmacia will provide an illustrative framework for the "best of times" in the sense of the scope of a CFO's responsibilities and having the leadership role to help define the vision and mission of the company and then play a vital part in the realization of that vision and mission.
Carol Tomé, EVP and CFO of Home Depot, will discuss the dynamic tension which exists in public companies between the idea of maximizing transparency in the post Enron era, and the need to withhold competitive information in order to maintain a market edge. Ms. Tome will discuss the CFO's role in deciding what is in the best interest of shareholders. Will shareholders benefit more from increased transparency or from increased competitiveness?
